Artists imagine and create work all across this country we call Canada. As an organization founded by second-generation settlers, to speak of “Canadian art” calls on our commitment to decolonize past structures in the arts sector, celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ history and diversity, and create space for Indigenous creators to share their art and culture.
This National Day for Truth and Reconciliation encourages each of us to not only recognize, but also acknowledge and reflect on Indigenous People’s history and the harmful impact of the institutionalized residential school system, felt strongly even today.
As we take steps to further inclusion – through gratis Pro Memberships for Indigenous artists, and donating a percentage of sales to the Indigenous Curatorial Collective, an organization that supports and connects fellow Indigenous curators, artists, writers, academics, and professionals through gathering – we acknowledge that there is yet more that we can do to work towards Reconciliation.
To learn more about Reconciliation, visit the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation. Consider donating to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Toronto Indigenous Harm Reduction, and other Indigenous-led organizations in your community. And if you are thinking about growing your art collection, we cannot recommend the artwork by the talented Indigenous artists on our platform enough, and you can make a direct impact on the art career of an Indigenous artist.
